Therma-Tru Construction in Cupertino, CA | Milpitas Construction

We provide independent Therma-Tru door installation and repair across Cupertino, CA 95014 and 95015. The thing that separates our Therma-Tru work here from anywhere else is simple: we plan around Cupertino’s tree ordinance before we ever order a slab. If you’re replacing an entry door on a lot with a protected oak or redwood, that review can add weeks, and we’d rather tell you upfront. Call (877) 752-4194 for a free estimate.

Why Cupertino Residents Choose Us for Therma-Tru Service

We’ve installed and repaired Therma-Tru door systems in Cupertino’s mid-century homes long enough to know exactly which models hold up on a south-facing Eichler entry and which ones fade within three summers. Ken Stafford, our owner, grew up in this area and built his trade on the same kind of tract homes that cover Cupertino’s flat, tree-heavy lots. When we spec a Therma-Tru Smooth-Star or Classic-Craft door, we’re thinking about your roofline, your sun exposure, and whether the city arborist is going to be part of this project. We’re not a manufacturer rep. We’re a full-scope general contractor with access to Therma-Tru’s catalog and the trade experience to install it correctly. For broader coverage, see our Therma-Tru sales & service page.

Common Therma-Tru Construction Problems We Solve in Cupertino

  • Sun fading and chalky fiberglass skins. Cupertino’s dry summers and intense UV hit south-facing entries hard, especially dark-colored Smooth-Star doors without a factory topcoat. We see doors that look fifteen years old after four because the finish wasn’t rated for full-sun exposure. We replace the slab or refinish and topcoat when the core is still sound.
  • Rotted bottom rails on wood-edge doors. Classic-Craft doors with wood edge banding fail fast when the bottom rail sits near a flat-roof drip line or an unsealed stoop. Eichler-style entries with minimal overhangs don’t shed water away from the door, and winter rain splash rots those rails from the bottom up. We fix the drainage detail, not just the door.
  • Sticking and delamination around glass lites. Fiber-Classic doors expand in summer heat, and when the frame is anchored into a settling mid-century wall, the slab binds or the glass lite gaskets pull away. Cupertino’s clay soil shifts more than people expect, and a door frame that moved half an inch will make a new Therma-Tru slab misbehave.
  • Original weatherstrip and sweep failures. Tract-built Cupertino homes from the 1980s and 90s often still have their original Therma-Tru weatherstrip. It’s brittle, it lets winter rain blow in, and the first sign is usually water staining on interior flooring near the threshold. Replacement seals are cheap; the floor damage isn’t.
  • Frame rot from flat-roof drainage issues. On low-pitch and flat-roof Cupertino homes, gutter and downspout details at the entry matter. When a downspout discharges too close to the door rough opening, the frame wicks water and the whole assembly fails. We relocate the discharge and rebuild the rough opening when we install the new door.

Therma-Tru Service in Cupertino: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

Here’s the part nobody outside Cupertino deals with. The city’s mature-tree protection ordinance requires an arborist review before we can remove or even prune trees near a door or window opening. That means a Therma-Tru installation on a lot with a heritage oak or redwood can stall for weeks unless the door location is planned around the root zone. We learned this the hard way on a job near Monta Vista when a simple entry-door replacement turned into a six-week plan-check detour because a 40-year-old redwood sat twelve feet from the rough opening. Now we check the tree inventory before we quote. It’s why our Cupertino estimates include a tree-setback review when the property shows protected species. You won’t get that from a door-only contractor. See our Cupertino service area coverage for more on how we work in this city.

Therma-Tru Models & Products We Service in Cupertino

We install and repair the full Therma-Tru lineup that makes sense for Cupertino’s housing stock: Smooth-Star fiberglass doors for clean modern entries, Fiber-Classic for a wood look without the maintenance, Classic-Craft for high-end replacements where the oak grain matters, and the Profiles line for contemporary and mid-century-inspired designs. We stock common weatherstrip, thresholds, and hinge hardware locally for fast Cupertino turnaround, and we source OEM Therma-Tru slabs and glass frames when the door’s structure is sound. When OEM parts are discontinued or backordered, we’ll switch to high-quality aftermarket seals and hardware, and we’ll tell you why. If the frame is rotted or the slab is warped beyond adjustment, we’ll say so straight. Repair only makes sense when the core and skin are intact.

FAQs – Therma-Tru Construction in Cupertino

Can you replace just the door slab on my Therma-Tru Fiber-Classic door, or do I need a whole new door system?
If the frame is square, the sill is solid, and the rough opening hasn’t moved, we can often replace just the slab and keep your existing jambs. We do it regularly on Cupertino homes where the frame is fine but the slab is faded or delaminated. If the frame is rotted or the wall has settled enough to throw the reveal off, a new prehung system is the honest fix. Call (877) 752-4194 and we’ll tell you which one you’re looking at.

My Therma-Tru door is sticking in the summer and letting in drafts in winter – what’s causing that?
You’re describing a fiberglass slab expanding in Cupertino’s summer heat against a frame that’s anchored into a settling mid-century wall. The wall moves, the frame moves with it, and the door binds at the top latch corner. It’s usually fixable with hinge adjustment or a frame reset, and we add new weatherstrip while we’re at it. If the wall movement is severe, we’ll talk about opening reinforcement before we put your door back in.

Do I need a permit to replace an exterior door in Cupertino, and does Therma-Tru meet local code?
A same-size door replacement usually doesn’t need a permit in Cupertino, but widening an opening or adding sidelights often does, and tree-protection review can trigger even when the door itself doesn’t. Therma-Tru doors meet California energy and egress code when installed with proper weatherstrip and a rated threshold. We pull permits when they’re required and we handle the arborist submittal if your lot has protected trees.

Can you match a new Therma-Tru door to the mid-century look of my Eichler home?
Yes. The Therma-Tru Profiles line and certain Smooth-Star configurations suit Eichler and rancher architecture well, especially when we spec a flush slab, a horizontal lite pattern, and paint that reads correct against flat-roof massing. We replaced a failing Fiber-Classic entry on a 1962 Eichler-style home near Monta Vista where the south-facing door had severe sun fading and a rotted bottom rail. We installed a new Smooth-Star slab with a factory-applied topcoat, added a concealed rain drip and a new threshold. It still reads mid-century, but it handles Cupertino weather.

What’s the best way to protect a new Therma-Tru door from Cupertino’s sun and rain?
Start with a factory-applied topcoat if you’re buying Smooth-Star or Fiber-Classic, and plan for a proper overhang or at minimum a rain drip above the door. South-facing entries in Cupertino get hammered by UV, and flat-roof homes let rain splash back onto the bottom rail. We spec the finish and the drainage detail together so the door lasts.
