CertainTeed Construction in Palo Alto, CA | Milpitas Construction
We provide independent CertainTeed installation, repair, and replacement across Palo Alto, from Midtown ranchers to Greenmeadow Eichlers. The one thing that makes our CertainTeed work different here: we plan around Palo Alto’s single-story zoning overlay and low-slope Eichler roof sections before we ever order a pallet of shingles. So the roof you get is the one your permit history and your home’s future won’t force you to redo. For a free estimate, call (877) 752-4194.
Why Palo Alto Residents Choose Us for CertainTeed Service
We’re a full-scope general contractor, not a roofing-only crew, which matters when your CertainTeed work has to coordinate with a kitchen addition, a second-story dormer, or drainage corrections that run through the slab. Ken Stafford grew up near the Milpitas BART station back when that corridor was mostly warehouse lots and family-owned shops, and he never really left. He got his start in construction technology at Evergreen Valley College before swinging a hammer on a paying job, and he’s spent the last two-plus decades building additions and remodels that hold up through Bay Area soil shifts and seismic quirks.
On a Palo Alto CertainTeed project, that background shows up in how we inspect before we quote. We check the deck, the slope, the flashing points, the wall-to-roof intersection, and whether the home sits on expansive clay. Then we tell you what’s actually wrong, not what’s easy to sell. From the roofline to the kitchen counter, one contractor, one conversation.

Common CertainTeed Construction Problems We Solve in Palo Alto
- Granule loss on south and west slopes. On original 1950s and 60s ranchers in Midtown with 3-tab shingles at 15 to 20 years, the south and west slopes wear first. Every winter atmospheric-river storm then drives water under lifted seal strips at the rake edges before the field of the roof ever shows a leak.
- Landmark shingles on Eichler low-slope sections. CertainTeed Landmark was never designed for the shallow pitch found on Greenmeadow Eichler-influenced homes. Where a previous roofer installed it anyway, we see ponding, sagging felt, and shingle distortion along the low side.
- Title 24 cool-roof rejection at permit. CertainTeed Landmark Pro installed pre-Title 24 with the wrong color on a custom rebuild forces us to re-verify the cool-roof rating at permit. On a re-roof, City of Palo Alto plan check can reject an assembly if the aged reflectance documentation isn’t on file.
- Flashing gaps at wall intersections. In south and west Palo Alto, expansive clay soil and slab movement crack shingle fields at the wall-to-roof intersection and open flashing gaps. Winter storms then push water down the wall sheathing behind the siding.
- Radiant-heat slab conflicts. In the Eichler tracts, radiant heating tubes are embedded directly in the slab. Any trench for drainage or downspout corrections near the roof can sever a loop if the slab isn’t pre-scanned first.
CertainTeed Service in Palo Alto: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Palo Alto’s single-story overlay zoning across much of the older core means any second-story or height-changing addition runs through design review and neighbor notification. That’s a city-specific constraint you won’t find in most surrounding towns. What it means for a CertainTeed roof is straightforward: if you’re planning a future addition, the re-roof should be specified to the eventual design, not the existing footprint. We’ve done exactly that for homeowners in the Midtown and Greenmeadow neighborhoods, as well as for CertainTeed in Stanford. The Greenmeadow Eichler tract’s radiant-heat tubes add a second layer: any trenching or foundation work near a CertainTeed roof’s downspouts and drainage corrections must be pre-scanned before cutting. We routinely pre-scan slabs before we trench. It’s slower, but it’s the only way to avoid turning a roofing job into a slab repair.
CertainTeed Models & Products We Service in Palo Alto
We install and repair CertainTeed Landmark and Landmark Pro asphalt shingles, Presidential Shake and Presidential Shake TL luxury shingles, Monogram and CedarBoards siding, and Flintlastic low-slope roofing membrane for the shallow-slope and flat-roof sections common on Eichler-influenced and custom flat-roof homes. Our parts approach is simple: we specify genuine CertainTeed accessories including starter strips, ridge vents, and the correct CertainTeed underlayment for the slope and exposure. Mixing aftermarket components voids the shingle’s rated assembly. If an aftermarket part is already on your roof, we flag it and quote the OEM correction. FAQs – CertainTeed Construction in Palo Alto
No. CertainTeed Landmark shingles are rated for steeper pitches, and on the shallow low-slope sections of Greenmeadow Eichlers they pond water and fail early. For those sections we specify CertainTeed Flintlastic membrane instead. A Greenmeadow 1960s Eichler contemporary came to us after an atmospheric-river storm drove water through a low-slope section where a previous roofer had laid Landmark over shallow pitch. We tore off to the deck, corrected the underlayment, installed Flintlastic on the low-slope side, and replaced the shingle field with Landmark Pro on the steeper sections. Before we trenched the new downspout runs, we pre-scanned the slab so the radiant-heat loops were never cut. If your roof has a low-slope section, call (877) 752-4194 and we’ll check the pitch before anyone quotes a shingle.
Yes, and the City of Palo Alto plan check will ask for the documentation. If your CertainTeed Landmark Pro was installed pre-Title 24 with a color that doesn’t meet the current cool-roof rating, or if the aged reflectance documentation isn’t on file, the permit can be rejected. On a re-roof, we verify the color and cooling rating before we submit. We know the review calendar well enough to flag this on day one, not after the plan check comes back.
It means any height-changing addition, including a second story or dormer, goes through design review and neighbor notification before a permit is issued. So if you’re planning a CertainTeed re-roof now and an addition later, we specify the roof to the eventual design, not the existing footprint. This avoids redoing roof work when the addition is approved. It’s one of the first questions we ask on any CertainTeed repair in West Menlo Park or Palo Alto roof.
Expect $8,000 to $20,000 for a standard CertainTeed roof replacement in Palo Alto, with metal roof installations running $15,000 to $40,000. Roof repairs run $400 to $1,800, and gutters and accessories fall in the same $400 to $1,800 range. The big variables here are the Eichler low-slope sections and whether Title 24 cool-roof documentation is already on file. Call (877) 752-4194 for a written quote, free.
A certified installer follows CertainTeed’s assembly requirements for slope, underlayment, and accessories, which maintains the shingle’s rated performance, whether it’s CertainTeed in Emerald Lake Hills or elsewhere. A generic contractor may mix aftermarket starter strips or use the wrong underlayment, which voids the assembly rating. We’re an independent contractor, not authorized or endorsed by CertainTeed, but we install to the specification because that’s what holds up in Palo Alto’s storm season. If the roof is sound we repair and reflash rather than tear off; if it’s a 20-year-old field, we’ll tell you a spot repair only buys one more storm season.
